The IBM Canada Shopping Cart was developed to allow Canadian businesses and consumers to learn about and order IBM products and services online. Using a catalog metaphor, the site invites the user to shop among available offerings and place them in a virtual "shopping cart" as they browse. They then move to the "checkout," where they provide credit card or billing and shipping information. The application calculates the sales tax automatically based on the user's province. Synaptic developed a series of Lotus Notes databases, with SSL encryption, to serve as the back-end engine for the cart. This engine can be used to instantly commerce-enable a limitless variety of catalogs. The site design has since been superseded.
